Connect to CheesyMUD!

CheesyMUD is located at cheesymud.com, port 4001.

Java Telnet Client

Are you completely impatient? Don't want to install anything? Then click on connect below. Well, you'll have to be patient enough for a 200k download. Que sera, sera.

Hey, you don't have Java! That's okay, you can use the default telnet client on your machine by clicking here.

Still reading? Good! Then you deserve a better way to connect.

No-frills clients

For you UNIX folks, just pop open a terminal window! If it's not in color, you'll want to look for a color terminal such as colorxterm. On a Mac, NCSA telnet 2.7b4 works great. And on the PC, I heartily recommend TeraTerm.

Just remember, once you get the telnet client up and running, you'll need to connect to cheesymud.com, port 4001.

Better clients

Personally, I recommend a specialized MUD client. tintin++ is very popular, and ports for your specific platform can be found at your nearest FreeBSD archive site. If you don't know where to get FreeBSD distribs, you probably don't want to try to learn tintin++. On the PC, I've heard some good things about Pueblo. However, I can't say anything about it personally, because I've always used zMUD. I'm just a creature of habit, I guess.

Once again, when you get the client running, look for "CheesyMUD" in the MUD list, or just use cheesymud.com, port 4001.

zMUD Sound Pack

If you happen to have a copy of zMUD, you can download our sound pack and enjoy CheesyMUD ((( in Stereo ))). You might notice on the page that there is an unlimited shareware version available (4.62), but the sound support is a little quirky and can take down your machine. The latest version (6.x) doesn't have this problem, but you're only allowed to use it 30 times before registering ($25).

To avoid turning into a zMUD infomercial, I'll cut right to the installation instructions (for 6.x).

  1. Download the sound pack. It's 1.86MB.
  2. Unzip the file with folders intact (WinZip calls it "Use Folder Names") to the Sounds subfolder of your CheesyMUD directory, wherever you installed zMUD. So, if you put zMUD in "C:\Program Files\zMUD", and the little CheesyMUD character icon you use to login is named "CheesyMUD", you should unzip the sound pack to "C:\Program Files\zMUD\CheesyMUD\Sounds".
  3. Explore to the directory you just used so that you can make sure the folders are there. 99% of all installation problems are caused because people can't use their unzip program. You shouldn't see any .wav files in that specific directory. They should be contained in five folders.
  4. Launch zMUD, log in your character, and click on the big "Prefs" button on the toolbar. If you've disabled the toolbar, you can get to this through "View/Preferences/General" in the menu. You should see a list tree on the left hand side of the preferences window. Click on the little plus next to Sounds. Select MSP General, then turn ON "Enable MSP" and turn OFF "Echo MSP triggers". Be sure to save your new preferences with "Settings/Save" in the menu.
  5. Then, as your character in the zMUD window, type "toggle sounds on". Type "dance", and if you hear something loud and annoying, you've installed everything correctly! I hope you find the sounds worth these unnecessarily complicated instructions.

You made it!

We hope you'll come waste your time with us. And, if you enjoy playing CheesyMUD just half as much as we've enjoyed making it, then we've enjoyed it twice as much as you.
